Lufkin ISD has announced that athletic director and head football coach Todd Quick is retiring, thus opening up one of the top jobs in East Texas.

In his 13 seasons in charge, Quick posted a 96-52 record with 2017 being the high-water mark with an 11-3 record and a trip to the 6A Division II Regional Final.

Lufkin missed the playoffs from 2021-2023, but Quick got Lufkin back on track this season with a 10-2 mark and a district championship before falling to College Station in the area playoffs.

Lufkin was originally aligned in 7-5A Division I with long-time East Texas rival Tyler High, Highland Park, Midlothian, Red Oak and three schools in the Fort Worth area. Lufkin appealed that placement and was moved to 9-5A Division I featuring schools from the Golden Triangle and the Houston area.

Quick took over Lufkin’s program in early 2012 after the sudden passing of head coach John Outlaw just before Christmas 2011. He'd spent the previous 26 seasons with Coach Outlaw as an assistant at Arkadelphia, AR, Sherman and in Lufkin.

Quick navigated the Panthers and the community through that turbulent time and kept things stable at Lufkin and kept the Panthers relevant on a statewide level.
