Sources have confirmed to Dave Campbell's Texas Football that Barry Derickson is stepping down as head coach at Sul Ross State to pursue other opportunities. Derickson spent the last three seasons as head coach and led the Lobos to an 11-20 overall record, including consecutive four-win seasons in 2022 and 2023, the most wins in back-to-back seasons for the program since 2016-2017. The Lobos earned seven wins total from 2018 through the 2021 campaign.

Derickson earned Dave Campbell’s 40-under-40 honors in 2023 after leading the Lobos to their most wins in a season since 2017 while serving as interim head coach. The interim tag was removed before the 2023 campaign began. He immediately turned the Lobos offense around and produced an average of 14.16 more points per game than the 2022 offense scored.

He was tasked with leading SRSU through a transition from NCAA Division III to NCAA Division II and the Lone Star Conference. Despite multiple challenges, including a lack of finances and scholarships, Derickson led the Lobos to three wins this year. Two of his victories were against LSC foes Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico.

I also want to thank the young men that have turned the tide here at Sul Ross and leading the charge into Division 2 and pioneering a new way into a new conference, all of you set a legacy that will never be forgotten. I also want to thank all the staff that have worked for me here at Sul Ross, if it wasn't for you, being able to trail blaze at Sul Ross wouldn't have been possible,” Derickson said in a press release. I would like to thank my family and friends for supporting me from so very far away. Lastly, I would like to thank Amanda Workman, who allowed me the opportunity to lead this program, and the great young men I got to coach here. I appreciate everything that I have at Sul Ross State University, and without it I wouldn't be the better man that I am today. I am stepping down to pursue other opportunities.
