Amarillo (2-1) vs Amarillo Palo Duro (2-1): The oldest rivalry in Amarillo ISD gets renewed this week, and for the first time in quite some time, there’s buzz around this game, despite both teams losing last week. Amarillo jumped out early on Class 6A Midland High, but the Sandies couldn’t contain Midland’s strong rushing attack in a 49-42 loss. QB Jett Lopez was outstanding for the Sandies, throwing for 287 yards and three scores, but Amarillo’s defense was shredded to the tune of 411 yards on the ground. After opening the season with back-to-back wins over Amarillo ISD rivals Tascosa and Caprock, the Dons fell to 4A Canyon on the road in a 26-23 heartbreaker. It was the first time in 2024 that Palo Duro had allowed points in the second half, as the Dons led by 12 before a Canyon rally. Palo Duro’s offense struggled for the second straight week, as the Dons managed just nine first downs and 210 yards on the night. It was just a couple of big plays that ended up producing most of Palo Duro’s offense. That lack of offense is a major concern for Palo Duro, as one thing Amarillo High can do is score points in bunches.

Stepp’s Pick: Amarillo by 7
