It’s a battle of state champions as Gunter, two-time 3A-Division II state champions with the state’s longest winning streak at 32 games (47 of their last 48), takes on last year’s 4A-Division I state champion Anna. It’s a huge leap up for Gunter to tangle with Anna as the Coyotes have four times Gunter’s enrollment as a new Class 5A-Division II program. Last week, Gunter was able to escape a big challenge at home from private school power Houston Kinkaid. Gunter’s defense, which has been very good in recent years, will absolutely have their toughest challenge in years with a dynamic Anna offense. Last week, Anna fell to Tennessee powerhouse Oakland High, 52-48, as the Coyotes were led by QB Ziondre Williams' 318 passing yards and four touchdowns to go with 113 rushing yards and a touchdown. The biggest concern for Anna in the loss was the minus-three turnover margin and the fact that the young defense allowed 535 yards in the loss. Gunter’s pistol offense will give Anna fits and will try to control the clock, churn out first downs and keep Anna’s explosive offense off the field. That game plan works to keep the game close, but Anna’s offense keeps the pressure on and the defense, which struggled against the run last week, will be much improved.
